How does the Lubavitcher Rebbe fit into the Rambam’s Halachic criteria for a valid Messianic candidate? (Part 1)

Q. How does the Lubavitcher Rebbe fit into the Rambam’s Halachic criteria for a valid Messianic candidate?

A. Until now we have traced the roots of the belief that the Rebbe is Moshiach back to its source in Chabad philosophy.  But this is not the end of the story. For a belief to have validity in the eyes of the Torah, it must also comply with the Jewish code of law also known as halacha. One of the most authoritative books of halacha is Rambam’s Mishna Torah. In it the Rambam codifies the entire Oral Torah including all the enactments of the sages and the various customs that were instituted from the times of Moses until the compilation of the Talmud[1].

In Rambam’s Laws of Kings he lays out the legal criteria that validates and invalidates an individual as a possible Messiah. The Rambam does this in three stages. First he outlines certain criteria which upon fulfillment thereof an individual enjoys a presumption that he is the Moshiach. Then the Rambam tells us criteria which if fulfilled grant the individual status as a “definite” Moshiach. Finally the Rambam gives two criteria by which we can know that a particular candidate definitely will not be the Moshiach.

Once a Messianic candidate enjoys status of a “presumed Moshiach” it is appropriate for the Jewish people to believe this person is Moshiach and call him “King Moshiach” though he has not yet attained the status of a “definite Moshiach”.

We know this because the great Talmudic sage Rabbi Akiva did exactly that to a presumed Moshiach named “Bar Kochba” until he lost his status as a Messianic candidate. [2]

So when testing the halachic validity of claims of followers of the Lubavitcher Rebbe who consider and call the Rebbe “King Moshiach”, we must confirm that the Lubavitcher Rebbe has met the Rambam’s criteria for a “presumed Moshiach” only.
The criteria that a Jewish leader must fulfill if he is to be considered a “presumed Moshiach” are:
“If a king will arise from the House of David who delves deeply in         Torah and occupies himself in the observance of Mitzvot, like David    his ancestor, in accordance with the written Torah and the oral                 Torah, and he will compel all of the Jewish people (lit. Israel) to             follow it [the Torah], and strengthen the            meticulousness [i.e. repair     the breaches of] of its observance, and he fights the wars of G-d-                behold, this [one enjoys the status] a “presumed Moshiach”[3]
We will now take each criterion separately to see if the Lubavitcher Rebbe and his accomplishments earned him status as a “Presumed Moshiach”. We proceed bearing in mind that some of the phrases the Rambam uses here are technical terminology drawn from Talmudic literature, in which case we will invoke the insights of later sages who expounded on the precise meaning of the Rambam’s words.
"A king will arise…”

The Rambam’s first criterion is that a Messianic candidate be a “king”.

Upon deeper examination of this law, it becomes obvious that the Rambam here at this stage is not referring to a “king” in the sense that he has been appointed by a high Court of Torah Judges (a Sanhedrin) or by a prophet[4]  and has the legal implications of a Jewish king. [5]
Likewise, many Torah sources use the word “king” to describe leaders of the Jewish people during the times before the redemption, though they did not enjoy the legal status of an anointed king[6]. After an analysis of how this term is used in Rabbinic literature, it becomes clear that the words “a king will arise” refers to a Torah leader whose words are accepted by many just as if they were said by a king.[7]  Did the leadership of the Lubavitcher Rebbe meet such a definition?
From the moment the Lubavitcher Rebbe took leadership of the Chabad movement, thousands of Jews throughout the world stood ready to do whatever he asked of them. Hundreds of letter each day poured into his office from Jews and non Jews asking advice on questions ranging from the belief in G-d to where to send their children to school to mathematics. The Rebbe, throughout his leadership received and responded to pleas for advice on matters of life and death.[8] When the Rebbe told a new couple to move with their family to a far-off town without any Orthodox Jewish community, his disciples went with joy.  When the Rebbe told his followers to go to Russia to give a piece of matzah to a Jew there, his followers went.
We must note, however, no one followed the Rebbe’s directives because they were forced to do so. In Judaism, a ruler who rules by force is considered a dictator (Moshel) not a king (Melech). The true aspect of kingship applies when one chooses to submit themselves to the directives of the king by choice.[9] “The King rules with his words” This unique relationship that existed between the Rebbe and his followers was borne of out of love and respect for the Rebbe’s opinion and never compulsion.
The quality of kingship that the Rebbe exuded during his leadership was attested to by many great leaders of our generation. For instance, it is known that the Head Rabbi of the famous Rabbinical academy known as the Mir, Rabbi Nachum Partzovitz after visiting with the Rebbe exclaimed that he had met a leader whose behavior was that of  royalty in every respect and that he was one who meets the halachic criterion of the Rambam that “a king will arise”.
The renowned Kabbalist Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira, also known as the “Baba Sali”[10], stated that the phrase in the Torah which says “and to him will be an assembly of nations” (which is referring to Moshiach) was referring to the Rebbe.[11]Another great legal authority on Torah Judaism of our generation was Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Aurbach[12] who upon hearing that a book had been written with the title “long live the king” (as a reference to the Rebbe) exclaimed: “A true King!”
Thousands of young couples (known as the shluchim) moved their families all around the world with complete self sacrifice, not knowing how they would find Kosher food or how their children would be educated. They accepted their assignments with joy just as if it came from a king. Even off-handed casual remarks became the stories to be learned from and emulated. When the Rebbe would speak on Shabbos millions of copies were made of his words and they were printed and distributed with its instruction to all in many languages.
No matter what topic arose in the Jewish world thousands wanted to know what the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s instructions were. This is not only true with children but old Chassidim and even those in Russia who had never seen the Rebbe in their lives. They gave over their bodies and souls for 40 years to spread Judaism and keep the flame of Torah burning on the instructions of the Rebbe without fear from the merciless rulers of the country.
Reb Mendel Futerfas was a leading example of a follower of the Rebbe who did as he was asked at risk of his own life. He led the great flight of Jews in 1946-7 from Soviet Russia via the border city of Lemberg. He sent his wife and children out of Russia but he refused to leave until the last of the Rebbe’s disciples escaped. He continued his smuggling activities until he was caught and imprisoned by the Soviet police. When imprisoned, his interrogators tried to extract information about the members of Chabad-Lubavitch. One would be wise under these circumstances to deny any association with the Rebbe and the Lubavitch movement as such association itself would cause one to be considered an enemy of the state. Though R’ Mendel knew that these integrations were often ended with a bloody beating and often in a fatal gunshot - he refused to disassociate himself with the Rebbe. Instead he explained to his interrogators that he honestly was not an enemy of Russia, “for if the Rebbe was in Russia and I was in another country, I would yearn to visit Russia to the same extent that I now yearn to leave Russia[13].” Such was the dedication of the chassidim of the Rebbe, who followed their Rebbe’s directives as that of a king not out of fear but out of love.
In another example of the royal quality of the Rebbe’s leadership, after each Shabbos and holiday approximately one thousand Jews would wait to accept wine from the cup that the Rebbe had recited a blessing over.

[1]                               End of the Rambam’s introduction to his Mishna Torah
[2]                               Rambam Mishne Torah Hilcos Melsachim 11:3 “Behold Rabbi Akiva, a great scholar from the scholars of the Mishna and he would..say upon him that he was “King Moshiach, and it appeared to him and all the scholars of his generation that he was Moshiach until he was killed because of his sins.” See also Yeushalmi Taanis 4:5. True, Rabbi Akiva was mistaken in his belief that Moshiach was Bar Kochba, but his behavior in calling him “King Moshiach” is enshrined for all time in the Rambam’s sefer as a practice from which to learn.
[3]                               Mishna Torah (Laws of Kings: 11:4).
[4]                               Laws of Kings 1:3
[5]                               We know this because the Rambam places this criterion as the first one a Messianic candidate must meet before he can even be considered for status as a “presumed Moshaich”.  If by “a king will arise” the Rambam requires that this King be an official anointed King or one appointed by a prophet, then there would be no need for this individual to fulfill the other of the Rambam’s criteria. Once the Kingdom of David has been returned-we would know that this is definitely King Moshiach as only King Moshiach will return the Kingdom of David (See Rambam 11:1). In short, such an interpretation would make the rest of this section of the Rambam unnecessary, thus making this an untenable reading of the Rambam.

Further,  the Rambam calls Bar Kochba a “king” (Kings 11:3) and endorses and even derives new laws out of Rabbi Akiva’s presumption of Bar Kochba as a presumed Moshiach though Bar Kochba never had the status of a King in the legal sense. Further making clear that the “king” that the Rambam requires at this stage is not a legal anointed king.
[6]                               The Rambam does exactly this in Hilchos Melachim 1:8 where he writes “A prophet that raises up a “king” from other tribes of Israel [besides the tribe of Yehudah, and that “king” will go in the ways of the Torah …behold this is a king and all the laws of kingship apply to him. There the Rambam twice calls this leader a “king” and only later says that all the laws of kingship apply to him.  It is also clear that the kingdom of David continues on in some way through his descendents though they may not have the legal status of a king (Hilchos Melachim 1:7) See also Mederesh Rabba at the end of Parshal Bechukisai where Yiftach called himself a King though he had the law of a Judge not a king (see Shaalos and Tshuvos of the Rashba Siman 284)

[8]                               For a collection of such stories and for a demonstration of the unwavering obedience of so many indiduvals to the Rebbe’s instructions see would ask for his help on every kind of issue and the most serious and critical matters, even matters of life and death. Did the Rebbe say that he is the Moshiach?

Many people for erroneous reasons I think ask whether the Rebbe declared himself as the Moshiach. I don't believe that we wait for a Messianic candidate to declare himself as the Moshiach as the mitzva to appoint a king falls on the Jewish People and not on the king himself. However there were many hints given to the people whether doing so is the right thing to do. Here is an occurrence that has come to light again due to a recent court case so it has been recorded in the lower courts as well now.

During Rabbi Groner’s testimony, he was asked whether using the title “Melech HaMoshiach” was ever authorized, or allowed, by the Rebbe to be used in the Rebbe’s Seforim. This after noting that some Seforim bear that title, such as the Lekutei Sichos and “Bsuras Hageulah”.
Rabbi Groner responded that he once entered the Rebbe’s room and expressly asked whether they may use the title, and the Rebbe consented. Afterwards, he read for the Rebbe the exact wording of the title page of “Besuras Hageulah” which states Melech HaMoshiach after the Rebbe’s name, and asked whether that may be printed, and the Rebbe nodded his holy head in the affirmative.

Great letter from Dr. Nissan Mindel answering fools who try to question the Rebbe and Lubavich.

B’H
Pesach Sheini, 5730
Thank you for your letter… I was puzzled by your question about the Cadillac – as you correctly surmised. But frankly, I could find more profitable use for my time than answering criticism of Lubavitch. If everything said and rumored were taken seriously & refuted – a full time secretary would be required (& nothing would be gained). For usually these critics are not interested in the truth but only wish to criticize and find fault. However, I cannot refuseyou an answer since you seem genuinely concerned…
To begin with, you have conveyed to me something which you heard from someone, who has heard it from someone else… Although I usually refuse to discuss hearsay, I will give my reply in the order of your letter:
1)      I am not aware of anyone being warned, before going into the Rebbe’s, shlita room for a private audience, to address him as “Your Eminence.” This is absurd. (I know of one writer who insists on using this expression when referring to the Rebbe, but that is the said writer’s prerogative). The usual custom is to address the Rebbe, when speaking to him, in the third person (“The Rebbe said…), but this respectful manner is due to any older Rov… it has always been the custom to use the third person when writing to anyone in Hebrew and the Rebbe also uses this form exclusively, except when writing to children. This is also my practice.
2)      Not to speak before spoken to, to stand in the Rebbe’s presence and to walk backwards when leaving – this is the customary way Chasidim act in the Rebbe’s presence… this is in the best tradition of Jewish etiquette. (I presume this would be the routine when being received in audience by the Queen?). The Rebbe asks non-Chasidim to sit down, and some do. I sit in the Rebbe’s presence only when taking dictation. That fellow is barking up the wrong tree if he criticizes this procedure.
3)      I know that the Rebbe does not accept personal gifts for himself or his wife from anyone. The only exception is books – and that for his library, since it is of public service. Checks made payable to the Rebbe go to ”Special   Discretionary Fund” – for special cases or directed to one of the institutions.
4)      On the question of “miracles” – here too, the well-known adage can be applied: “For him who believes, no proof is necessary, for him who does not believe, no proof will suffice.” However I will present here some basic observations in regard to miracles: Jews who believe in the Torah believe in miracles; Jews who believe in the Talmud, believe in the ability of certain men (Tannaim etc.) to perform miracles; many men are mentioned in the Talmud who perform miracles, and none was “deified”; the efficacy of blessings and prayers has often been stressed in the Talmud, even of an ordinary Jew; there are “miracles” & there are “miracles”… of turning blood into water etc. and of a blessing come true – such as a refu’a, children, affluence. As for the first kind – I have not heard of any Chosid claim the Rebbe has performed this. It is usually a case of his blessing or prayer having materialized. Those who have experienced such “miracles”- do not have to see a “rational” explanation for, as mentioned above, it is well within the realm of men, especially saintly men. Skeptics may want to “rationalize” such miracles – it is their prerogative.

You can't have a geula without a King Moshiach.

The markets are crashing.
The world is going bonkers.
Jews, non Jews are all expecting the Moshiach to show up at any moment.
But, here is the thing. How do you expect a king, Moshiach will be a king, to drop out of the sky and usher in the Messianic era when according to the law the king Moshiach will be a known sage prior to the geuala! Here is the Rambam, where we assume a person to be Moshiach before the he defeats the nations around him and before he gathers the exiles, and before he builds the Beis Hamikdash, etc.

4. If a king arises from the House of David who meditates on the Torah and occupies himself with the commandments like his ancestor David, in accordance with the written and oral Torah, and he will prevail upon all of Israel to walk in [the ways of the Torah] and strengthen its breaches, and he will fight the battles of G-d it may be assumed that he is Mashiach. If he did [these things] successfully (and defeated all the nations around him), built the Sanctuary on its site and gathered the dispersed of Israel he is definitely Mashiach! He will [then] correct the entire world to serve G-d in unity, as it is said, “For then I will turn to the peoples a pure tongue that all shall call upon the Name of G-d and serve Him with one consent.” (If he did not succeed to that extent or was killed, it is clear that he is not the [Mashiach] promised by the Torah … for all the prophets said that Mashiach is the redeemer of Israel and their savior, and he gathers their dispersed and reinforces their commandments…)
In fact as the Rambam explain Rabbi Akiva himself pointed to a person who was alive during his time as the Moshiach, namely Bar Kochba, who led a revolt against the Roman Empire to free the Holy Land. This only shows us the obligation of finding the right candidate to be Moshiach in our own days.
Like we have posted here many times, the person who is from the house of Dovid, who meditates on the Torah day and night, who is fighing day and night that Jews should act like Jews should act, fights to fix any breaches in the Torah, and fights the wars of G-d is the Lubavitcher Rebbe himself, the one and only King Moshiach!

The Top 10 Reasons the Rebbe is Moshiach!!!

1. When Moshiach comes the world will be covered with the knowledge of G-d as the water covers the sea bed. We will know all the great secrets of the Torah. These secrets are the inner teachings of the torah which we call Chassidus. The person from where the wellsprings of these teachings come from in our days is the Rebbe.

2. He fights for the wholesomeness of the Torah. The Rebbe fights that the Torah should be learned and fulfilled in full without any compromises. The Rebbe instituted the study of the Rambam's Mishna Torah in order that every Jew should learn the entire Torah. As the Rambam says that by learning the Mishna Torah you can know the whole entire Torah, since it encompasses all of the laws applicable now and during the times of the temple. (As well as the laws of the identity of Moshiach).

3. The Rebbe fights for the wholesomeness of the Jewish people. A Jew is someone who is born to a Jewish mother of converted according to the halacha.

4. He fights for the wholesomeness of the Land of Israel. The Rebbe is always outspoken about not giving away any land because the Land is a gift form G-d to the Jewish People. Also, the vital importance of security of the land of Israel.

5. Many of the false want to be Messiahs and many of the well-meaning but confused Rabbis of today keep insisting and convincing other naive Jews that they have to drop everything and run fast to the Land of Yisrael. This is a sign of falsity and nonsensical hysteria. The Rebbe is quite different in this regard. The Rebbe tells us that Moshiach is coming therefore build where you are now. Make the land you are in a Land of Yisrael, a land that wants to do the will of Hashem. This is a true sign of a real Moshiach. He doesn’t' create hysteria, panic and fear but on the contrary he creates earning for the Geuala, positive energy for the Geuala, Torah and mitvos to bring the Geuala.

6. The Rebbe is associated with 770 which is the gematria of the house of the Moshiach.

7. The Gemmara says that Moshiach's name is Menachem.

8. The Rebbe told us the leader of the generation is Moshiach and to learn the Torah of the leader of the generation in Likkutey Sichos. Likkutey Sichos is the Torah of the Rebbe,

9. The Rebbe is the one Jewish Leader in the world who cares about every single Jew and in every single community. He sends his emissaries all over the world to bring the redemption to the Jewish people and world by spreading the 7 laws of Noach. Such an undertaking has never been done before in the history of the world.

10. The saying that the Rebbe approved of... Yechi Adonenu Marenu V'Rabenu Melech HaMoshiach Leolam Voed. !!! Long Live the Rebbe King Moshiach!!!

There are so many other reasons but we'll have to stop for now because we are counting until 10 today.

Does the Rebbe want us to identify him as the final Moshiach?

This is from Sichos In English; Many people use the event of chassidim singing Chaeiley Adonenu Moshiach Zidkeinu to prove that the Rebbe did not want us to identify him as the Moshiach. This beautiful analysis shows that quite the opposite is rally true.

What is the Rebbe's position on identifying him as Moshiach?

Rabbi Even Yisroel on p. 197-98 cites a  farbrengen from 1991 when the chassidim sang a song identifying the Rebbe as Moshiach, to support his assertion that the Rebbe 'tried to quash all speculation' about his 'Messianic role.'  The author writes that the Rebbe “stopped them quickly and said 'I cannot leave here now, but after hearing such a claim I should leave this room as a protest.'”  (It should be noted that the word ‘protest’ as translated by the author does not appear in the original Yiddish and is an error.) The author neglected to mention that at a 1984 farbrengen when a similar song was song, the Rebbe said that the focus on the identify of Moshiach detracts from the work of bringing Moshiach. To understand the error of Rabbi Even Yisroel, it is necessary to explore these 2 farbrengens.  The 1991 sicha was completely different than the one in 1984. In 1984, the Rebbe was screaming that the publicizing of the Rebbe as Moshiach goes against and stands in the way of spreading Chassidus and pushes people away.  He spoke with a lot of pain and harshness.  Conversely, in the sicha of 1991, the Rebbe did not utter one word in that vein. In fact, the Rebbe was smiling and spoke just a few words in a quiet voice when he said  'you sing this song with these words while I sit here by the table.  . .   I should have walked out. But I won't. . ' There are 2 reasons which were given by the Rebbe which were  left out of the book. The first reason is that 'it is not going to help anyway. The Chassidim are going to continue saying what they are saying.'   The Rebbe smiled when he said that.   Unlike in 1984, there was no anger or talk about  destruction. And the second reason the Rebbe gives is 'I don't want to disturb the sheves achim gam yachad.' It is a farbrengen, there is unity among chassidim. He didn't want to do anything that is going to disturb that unity.   The book did not point out that he most certainly did not say it is wrong, terrible,  or destructive to identify the Rebbe as Moshiach. There was not one word of that nature. All he said is he should have walked out. Because if he is remaining to sit at a public farbrengen while a song identifies him as Moshiach, he is  publicly admitting he agrees with its content. At that time, the Rebbe did not publicly acknowledge this. In other words, it wasn't the time yet for the Rebbe to be publicly acknowledge this.
